I always laugh when I hear parents arrogantly state that their kids could never get away with anything, because “they did it all when they were teens.” Really??? Unfortunately, teens are doing things that we never dreamed of even ten years ago.
I recently read a Parent Society article detailing trends on the rise that pose a risk to teenagers. Some I was familiar with, but others took me by surprise. Below is a list of some of the more outrageous ones. If there’s even one on this list that you’re not aware of, you’d better read up on it and talk to your teen.
Vodka Eyeballing: A new, and not to mention dangerous, way to consume alcohol, teens are pouring vodka directly into their eyes. Vodka Eyeballing is unsafe because repeated occurrences can scar the cornea or even lead to blindness.
Tampon Drunkenness: This is another way that kids are getting drunk without drinking any alcohol. Girls have been soaking tampons in vodka and then inserting them vaginally, while boys have been doing the same and then inserting them rectally, in order to become intoxicated. Tampon Drunkenness is not only physically dangerous but also poses the risk of alcohol poisoning.
Distilling Hand Sanitizer: There are high amounts of alcohol in hand sanitizer, and teens have been using salt to separate it from the other ingredients in this easy to access item. After consuming the separated alcohol, kids become intoxicated, facing the risk of alcohol poisoning. The best way to avoid this dangerous teen trick is to only keep the foam sanitizer around your house.
Vodka Gummy Bears: This is extremely dangerous and has put many teens in the hospital with alcohol poisoning. Instructional how-to guides on infusing gummy bears with vodka can be found YouTube and Pinterest. Vodka Gummy Bears allows kids to consume alcohol through eating the candies. These can be consumed in high amounts, resulting in high levels of intoxication.
Purple Drink: A drink that has gotten much media and Hollywood star attention, this is a toxic combination of Sprite, Jolly Ranchers, and codeine cough syrup. Consuming Purple Drink leads to lethargy, unresponsiveness, and hallucinations.
ChatRoulette.com: Recently featured on Keeping up with The Kardashians as a fun and playful site, this site is dangerous for teens because the random video chat pairing of a stranger along with the lack of security filters subjects them to explicit, inappropriate content as well as disturbing images.

I’m sad to say I hadn’t heard of ANY of these before reading this. Whoa. I have three daughters and my twins (the eldest) are almost 7, so while we still have time, I know that things will only get worse before they reach tween/teenhood. Thanks for sharing this. The tampon thing? HOLY HELL!
I had heard of the others, but you totally got me with the eyeballing and tampon drunkeness. WTH? Who even thinks to pour Vodka, in their eyes. And the tampon thing, especially for the boys, I’m without words. Ugh.
Ellen
Vodka Gummy Bears and Distilling hand sanitizer are the only ones I had heard of… I was floored by the alcohol enemas last week… I am totally out of the loop.
I can’t ever take for granted that I am smarter than my children.
Alison, I have researched chat roulette I “heard” that college kids use it as a drinking game. There are 3 bets you take as to what will be the next image to come up. One is a party, one is a woman, and one is a man masturbating. In researching for an article, my coworker and I tried this and found it to be shockingly true. I got the man on the second roulette and my boss on the fifth. Very Very scary!
any parent who actually believes teenagers are dumb enough to do this shit should be considered too gullible to raise children.
we’d much rather just drink a beer and smoke a blunt
I am a former high school teacher, and I can say for sure that several of these have been around for 15+ years. I never heard of anyone putting liquor in their eyes, but tampons, yes. Kids could get away with it at school, at sporting events, etc. As long as they weren’t acting stupid, they didn’t get caught because no one could smell alcohol on their breath.
Wow teens are so creative, never heard of these! Good to know so I’m in the loop
