Everything in the universe functions on balance and harmony, the fluid duality of opposites balancing each other – up and down, black and white, hot and cold, earth and sky.
The Taoist philosophy of opposites, Yin and Yang, is the basis of Chinese medicine, and the reason for many of our modern ailments. Yin is considered feminine and Yang is masculine. When we are out of alignment with our natural way of being, our health is negatively impacted.
For women, Yin is their natural way of being; however, in Western society, business is conducted in a Yang fashion. Kudos are given to business people who are seen as aggressive, arrogance is seen as a trait of a successful entrepreneur, working hard and long hours are hallmark to success.
Take Jane, for example. Exhausted from her poor sleep, gaining weight and suffering from a very short fuse, Jane was a typical entrepreneur. Trying to balance motherhood, a husband who worked overseas and a startup company, Jane was the epitome of the Yang being in excess and her feminine yin being too tired to function properly. Her feminine physiology was overwhelmed and her mind was on constant overdrive.
For men, Yang is a natural way of being. Men are fueled from their actions and what they can do. For women, this can often be a physiologically taxing way of being. Don’t get me wrong – women are extremely efficient and very capable. However, we need to balance this Yang existence with Yin activities.
Finding Your Feminine Power in a Masculine World
#1: Celebrate Goddess Day – Once a month, treat yourself to a day of Yin activities. A mani/pedi, shopping for something fun to wear, a trip to the salon, lunch with girlfriends, reading something light, drinking wine with her sisters, or watching a chick flick (complete with a box of Kleenex).
#2: Consume Yin Foods – Food as Yin is considered earth, dark, moisture. Think green leafy vegetables and calming herbal tea to balance the Yin.
#3: Seek Holistic Treatments – Consider seeking holistic treatments, such as Acupuncture treatments, massage and herbals to increase your energy and vitality.
