It’s true what they say that HALF of the battle is just showing up. That means as soon as you do show up, you are halfway there! Woo-HOO!
That means your job is just that – showing up!
The story of the horrible beginning to a marvelous end
It was THAT time of the year – yes, ahem…time for my annual ‘parts’ inspection. And immediately following my appointment, I had registered for a networking lunch-and-learn featuring a speaker I wanted to connect with.
As my (UN)luck would have it on this particular day, my doctor was being shadowed by an Intern (read: not good at administering the ‘parts’ exam). In my ENTIRE life, I have never had such an experience. Let’s just say that normally I expect dinner and a movie first.
Besides suffering a severe case of the ickies, working with the Intern made me late. VERY LATE. I just wanted to go home and shower. I wanted to bail instead of making a bad first impression showing up late. I wanted an excuse not to go because I was nervous.
But instead, I showed up.
I cannot begin to tally the opportunities that resulted from showing up that day, but needless to say, not showing up would have been a huge mistake. Even today, I continue to reap the benefits from that single event!
Winning the First HALF of the Battle
#1: Shift your thinking – Start thinking about what opportunities you can create this month, this week, today. Start talking to people, start connecting. START showing up.
#2 Energize the potential – Don’t be a wallflower. Step up – ask for help, shout “Pick me, pick me!”, make IT happen!
#3 Create space for opportunity – Label an appointment in your calendar “When opportunity knocks” as both a space to fill and a reminder that you are looking for opportunity.
Momentum Monday Challenge: Pick something, anything this week and just show up!

I can sympathize with your experience — I was cringing while reading! Still, you are completely right about showing up being half the battle. So often it is easy to come up with an excuse as to why you shouldn't do something (you're late, unprepared, confidence issues, fear of public speaking…..) but usually none of them matter.
I also love your idea of creating a space for opportunity to come knockin! Christine and I talk all the time about the power of 'creating the void' in your life — personal or business — that will inevitably be filled by something bigger and better. It has yet to fail us! — Tara
It's so true – we really need to stop getting in our own way and allow life to gift us with opportunities.
I have such an appointment next week. With nothing scheduled after it. But I'll be watching for opportunities. Thank you …
Love it! I’m always saying that fabulous entrepreneurs need to be more Shameless! They need to step up and say “Here I Am” to opportunity! You’ve encapsulated that perfectly here! Thanks! I going to share with everyone I know.
