Truth be told, if what we say to ourselves over and over and over again was a mantra, it would be more like “I think I can’t, I think I can’t, I think I can’t” than the famous words of the little engine that could. Whether we admit to it or not, we all are plagued by our own self-limiting beliefs.
Our limitations are the unspoken fears that hold us back, stop us from taking that dangerous step forward. It manifests itself in many different ways — sometimes as worry about what other people will think, other times as fear of failing at what you truly desire.
Whatever it is, it’s time to let go of it and step into the world of “Who cares?” and “Why not?”
Who cares? Who cares what other people think? Truthfully, they are all trying to survive (and hopefully thrive) in the same crazy world as you are. Those who truly matter will feel your heartbreaks and rejoice at your successes the same as if it had happened to them. Those who would judge you or hold a botched attempt at your dreams against you aren’t worth your time.
Why not? Why don’t you deserve success? Why not you? Sometimes what is standing in your way is your own disbelief that you have what it takes to do it. Trust yourself. Remember that what you see as all perfect and polished on the outside is just what others choose to share. It’s never that easy for anyone so stop comparing your imperfect reality to their perfect presentation.
How to Let Go of Limitations
Learn to Recognize — Start paying attention to what your inner critic is telling you. Your negative thoughts are clues to the limiting beliefs that are holding you back. If you are having a hard time figuring them out on your own, book a session with a coach or facilitator who can give you an outside perspective.
Start Unraveling — Ask yourself why you hold these beliefs. Where do they come from? Is it from a past experience or is it beliefs other people have pushed on you? Put those beliefs to the test. What would happen if you were to proceed on the premise that the were false? What then?
Take Daily Action — Break down your goals into actionable steps and start checking them off on a daily basis. Nothing breaks through mental barriers like just plain getting down to business and getting it done! Let your results speak for themselves.
