Summer’s coming to an end – but that doesn’t mean fun weekends have to disappear with it. Check out this list of ideas for great autumn weekends.
Go consignment shopping
Round up last year’s winter gear and head to a consignment shop to trade in your old glories for warm new treasures. Swing by a Salvation Army on your way home with some cheap durable finds along the way.
Laughter Yoga
Calm down and let loose with this growing trend. This technique essentially combines yoga breathing with laughter and encourages you to make life lighter. You’re faking it, but psychologically and physiologically the body can’t tell the difference. It can be done on your own or with friends.
See a play
Just like fashion, Fall means a new launch season of onstage drama. Get dolled up and head to the theatre with the girls or that special someone. Go all out, have that glass of wine (or two) before the first act starts.
Have a picnic
Sometimes the oldies are the best, and there’ nothing more classic than picnics. Enjoy some fun in the sun before winter hits — round up the kids, pack a lunch and head to the nearest park. Play a game of frisbee, or take it easy and read books on a blanket.
Read a novel
A good novel is like a cheap, portable sensory deprivation and isolation chamber – in a good way. Make your favorite drink, get snuggled into a comfy spot around the house and get lost in a novel. Set the kids up with a book of their own, or make sure someone’s around to keep them entertained.
Get some exercise
It’s good for you, but it can also be fun. Whether it’s pounding the pavement, hitting the gym, or playing a team sport, getting your heart rate going shouldn’t seem like a chore. It’s a great way to connect with busy friends and give you an energy boost.
Take photos in the park
Bring a camera, a girlfriend and the kids and head outside to enjoy the beautiful seasonal colors. It’ll make for good conversation and a pretty backdrop for your snapshots. Get creative and try different exposures that everyone tries to duplicate.
Sell the best shots to iStockphoto or another stock image site.
Get Crafty
Haul all your best craft gear and get the kids’ hands dirty with fun seasonal crafts. Try an autumn leaves recipe holder; you can try recipes together, or frame a fun family photo with leaves and glue.
Head to the zoo
Pack a day pack, get some friends together and take the kids to the nearest zoo. Head out early and make a day of it. Or, after a full day of lions tigers and bears, be back home by mid-afternoon. Oh my!
