Marketing Lessons from the Girls Don’t Poop Video by PooPourri.com
#1: A Clear Target Audience — Taken straight from Marketing 101: choose a specific target audience and address them directly. In this case: women who hate the embarrassment of leaving behind a nasty odor after using the little girls’ room identified clearly in the title and in the opening sequence of the video. The promise is to maintain the illusion that girls don’t poop.
#2: The Problem Explained — Clearly outline the problem your product solves. As our charming PooPourri presenter points out, despite the title of the video, women do (ahem)…you know and that can be embarrassing when you are at work, a party or visiting your boyfriend.
#3: Shareable Humor — Enough said.
#4: Details on How It Works — Never assume your audience will understand how it works! You need to share the step-by-step details on how exactly it works (bonus points for PooPourri for including visuals and a funny description).
#5: Clarification — Ask yourself where people may get confused when viewing your video (it’s safe to assume that they are viewing it while doing a thousand other things). For PooPourri, the possible point of confusion was that the video was a farce ad so the lovely presenter added “Yes, it is a real product.” If you view it on YouTube, the description under the video also states that it is a real product.
#6: Social Proof — Include social proof in the form of testimonials, ratings, reviews and/or awards. The PooPourri video highlights that they have sold over 4 million bottles AND received a over one thousand reviews, resulting in a rating of 4.8 out of 5.
#7: Remove Risk — Make it easy for your audience to try it out by including a no-hassle, money-back guarantee. What’s not to love about the “Unconditional ‘Stink-Free’ Guarantee”?
#8: Buying Instructions — Don’t forget to tell them how to buy. Like magic, a “PooPourri.com” button appears on the video while the presenter gives the final pitch, instructing viewers to “Click here or go to PooPourri.com!” which gives viewers two ways of connecting: 1) clicking the link immediately or 2) visiting the site at a later date.
#9: Make it Short and Sweet — Keep it short because even the most entertaining video will lose people if it’s too long. Girls Don’t Poop clocks in at an easy-to-watch 2 minutes and 16 seconds.
